Fred returns to Shakhtar following MH17 disaster

The Brazilian has returned to the team camp after refusing to travel amidst the ongoing issues in Ukraine, while the club have confirmed they will be based in Lviv this season

Fred has returned to Shakhtar’s team camp after refusing to travel following the MH17 plane crash.

Fred was one of six South American players at the club who did not travel back to the Ukraine after a friendly match, with Ismaily, Douglas Costa, Alex Teixeira, Dentinho and Facundo Ferreyra all opting to stay away.

However, a statement on the club’s official website confirmed Fred had returned, with Ismaily set to do the same in the 'coming days'.

The statement read: “Shakhtar continues to prepare for the start of the Ukrainian league season. Fred returned to the team camp. In the coming days, they expect Ismaily to join the Pitmen. “

Due to ongoing political tension, the club have been unable to operate in Donetsk and have confirmed that they will now play their home games in Lviv for the upcoming season.

"Hand on heart, [the support was] not quite equal. But, I think, we will correct it in the future," CEO Sergei Palkin told the club's official website.

"And it will happen in Lviv. Because we plan to play here our home games in the domestic league and the Champions League."

The CEO also spoke of the pressing need to convince Shakhtar's absent players to return to Ukraine - stating they should not be afraid of returning to the country.

"Now we have the period of persuading them: it's OK in Ukraine, they can play here, reside and live a normal life," he added.

"This is the main task for today, because many people are scared. In the future, I hope, everything will improve and get back on track. If not, there are other mechanisms to be involved."
