The 31-year-old has been charged with allegedly abusing and pushing all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja immediately after they left the field for lunch on the second day of the match.
It is alleged that this was a continuation of a verbal altercation between Anderson and Jadeja as they were walking from the field.
Anderson denies the allegations made against him and the England and Wales Cricket Board says they will support the player whose charge comes under Level 3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct.
In addition, they say that they intend to lodge code of conduct breaches against Jadeja.
All Level 3 breaches carry a penalty of between four and eight suspension points.
Two suspension points equates to a ban of one Test, or two ODIs, depending on which type of match is scheduled next for the suspended player.
Intimidation of an umpire or match referee whether by language or conduct (including gestures) during an international match. (Includes appealing in an aggressive or threatening manner).
Threat of assault on another player, player support personnel or any other person (including a spectator) during an international match.
