Brazil must stop hiding from World Cup failure - Zico

The former midfielder says it is unacceptable that the Selecao's 7-1 semi-final defeat in the World Cup has been put down to mistakes and feels the country must start from scratch

Brazil legend Zico has said the country must start from the beginning as they look to recover from a disappointing World Cup campaign.

The South Americans were billed as the favourites to win the tournament on their own soil but failed to impress before they suffered a 7-1 trouncing at the hands of Germany and went on to lose 3-0 to Netherlands in their third-place playoff.

Zico, who played in three World Cup finals for the Selecao, insists the country must "stop hiding" and work to improve the nation's football.

"It's time to put on the sandals of humility and start from scratch," he told Bild. "You can't keep hiding. You have to change many things. Many things have to change.

"All I hear is that there were mistakes and that it does not matter when you lose in the semi-final against Germany, whether it's by one goal or seven. But that's not acceptable.

"We need to rethink the training of our players. We should be working mostly with young talents."
